Squids Gate Woods, Squids Gate Lane, Challock, TN25 4DR
Set in a woodland near the gliding club, Challock is a friendly small club meeting once every two weeks on a Sunday morning between 10 and 11.30. Stand traffic can get busy at times due to the short entrance times, and popularity of the shoot.
The layout is set over 9 stands of 10 birds at the moment, with a possible 100 birder in the near future. Some stands are in clearings and some in wooded areas, with a raised stand, a dug out, (which is superb for shooting the rabbit) and a selection of stand positions to shoot from, that change each week.
Layouts are fairly similar each shoot, with an ABT trap stand at the
Cabin, a pair of high crossers, and a pair of incoming driven, and the infamous pair of low incomers…shoot pairs at your peril.
The other stands vary depending on conditions and how difficult John sets the traps.
There’s no counting system on the radio controlled bowman traps which all seem fairly reliable, the rabbit which is more like a gazelle breaks occasionally before you can shoot it.
There’s self service tea and coffee available, and recently bacon and sausage rolls freshly made at very reasonable prices.
It’s a friendly practice shoot, with no competition, apart from friendly rivalry and the chance of your high gun score going up on the cabin whiteboard.
There’s a restriction on fibre wad cartridges only, they are also available to buy on site.
Overall there’s a great atmosphere, and everyone is made to feel welcome.
No lessons or corporate groups is a bonus. Plenty of parking space is available.
