Hawley was the first ground that I had the experience of pulling the trigger of a shotgun, I remember being quite surprised at the recoil and consequent bruising if you didn’t get the mount quite right. Purple yellow and brown bruising aside it didn’t stop me going back for more, I loved it. It was my weekly Saturday morning treat for a few months. Meanwhile my shooting buddies encouraged me to apply for my license and the long wait ensued.
Watching the other shooters hitting targets with some ease, I wondered whether my scorecard would improve with practice or if there was some magic thought process that would suddenly click into place…seems it was a bit of both. I had couple of lessons at Greenfields meantime to up the anti…and things started to improve.
I should have kept my old scorecards to gauge my progress, I remember hitting 26 out of 70 on my first shoot, and having a gradual improvement each week.
Targets at Hawley are actually very easy to someone who has been shooting for a while, its an excellent place to learn the basics as a beginner, and a good place to massage your ego if not.
I don’t shoot at Hawley very often now, prefering to go to more challenging shoots.
There’s a good atmosphere at this club with many regulars that prefer to shoot there. You know there’ll alway be some friendly faces on a Saturday morning if you turn up on your own.
Sporting is 7 stands of 10 birds and they run a sport trap/ compac layout too.
There’s no counting system on the traps or delay timers, so self buttoning means you need a partner, or join a squad, a good way to make new friends and shooting partners.
There’s a food wagon for the usual cups of tea and brekkie burgers etc, but no clubhouse and limited facilities. Parking is never a problem, even when the corporate events are being held.
Sundays is competition day, usually 70 bird with monthly 100 bird setup. Most targets are going away/incoming due to the limited space.
